“Americana” seems to be the label we use when the music is equal parts folk, country, rock, and bluegrass. In this genre, Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch are at the top of the heap, with sold-out performances wherever they tour. The Americana Music Association recently awarded Welch and Rawlings the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, an award both have duly earned. Whatever the label, when the musicians of the Dave Rawlings Machine come to town, you can simply call the music “awesome!”
